Jaunt To Tumut.

Tue, 18. Sep. 2018
18:31

Location

Riverglade Caravan Park, Snowy Mountains Hwy, Tumut NSW 2720, Australia

Info

After spending some time at Questacon with the kids, we confidently head off to Tumut via Wee Jasper. A narrow winding road in places but very scenic. Only 50 kms to go to Tumut as we roll into Wee Jasper. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜ There is a sign saying gravel ahead. That can't be the road! What do they mean "Not Suitable For Caravans"? โ˜นโ˜นโ˜น The start of the gravel road is narrow and the sign says soft edges. We are in trouble. Oh well back we go and head off to Tumut via Yass and the Hume Highway. The minor stuff up was worth nearly 2 hours. ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿค”๐Ÿค” It was a worth while drive though. "Another Adventure". (Nice analogy to the Griswalds, Rob. ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™„ ) Arrived just on dark. We are right on the banks of the rapidly flowing Tumut River. Cool. Up early in the morning to take photo. Forecast is 1ยฐc I believe. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐Ÿ˜ฌ Will let you know.

Snow!! ๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ™‚

10:06

Location

Selwyn Snow Resort, Kings Cross Rd, Mount Selwyn NSW 2630, Australia

Info

As we approached the snow we started to see many Brumbys along the road and then there it was. Snow, patches along the road and in the bush. Excitement from the back seat increased as we travelled. We are at the end of the snow season and most of the snow is gone, but the snow is still being made at night on the Selwyn Snow Resort. First port of call was the Toboggans. We only hired for the kids. Only one run down the slope before the first snow ball gets thrown. Oh well! Here we go! ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™„ Then it was making a snow man, then it was laying in the snow and then more rides on the Toboggans. Less than one hour past and we get asked if we can go on that. That being the ski lift. Well one thing lead to another and we soon has skis and boots and standing at the top of the beginners slope watching Aidyn go down the slope without waiting for us or instructions. ๐Ÿ˜ฏ๐Ÿ˜ฏ๐Ÿ˜ฏ Well, who would have known. He made it all the way and was soon on his way back on the ski lift. And, there goes Taleah doing the same. ๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ™‚ Feeling rather redundant we might as well join them. We did for over an hour and each run they got better. The ability of the young! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ After the first hour Aidyn joined one of the workers building a snow castle with a slide. Taleah asked about the other ski lift and slope and the guy on the beginners ski lift suggested we try the Triple Ski Lift. And, we did. Longer and a tad faster. Taleah was hooked and we did the slope another 6 times until her hands were too cold to continue. It was 3ยฐc and her gloves were wet through from digging in the snow earlier. We convinced Julie to leave the beginners slope and join us on the longer slope. All good until Taleah cut Julie off and it was all down hill from there if you get my meaning. Julie went back to the more sedate slope. The story is that she parked herself on top of the arrester bed at the end of the slope. Eye witnesses report that it was spectacular! ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿค—๐Ÿค— No video footage though. Shame! Heading back to the caravan with the heater on and the jury is still out on going back tomorrow. Aidyns says he will.

Got a fire pit from the park and sitting around a very warm fire eating the soup. Yummm! ๐Ÿœ๐Ÿœ๐Ÿœ Very cosy after a day in the snow.

Location

Selwyn Snow Resort, Kings Cross Rd, Mount Selwyn NSW 2630, Australia

Info

Back at the snow for some more fun. We were all a little slow starting today. Only 1ยฐc again and a few sore bodies. Well not maybe the kids, just the adults. ๐Ÿ˜–๐Ÿ˜–๐Ÿ˜– A finer day today, less wind but still only 4ยฐc in the shade. Even less people on the snow today. At one stage I think we were the only ones. the snow was a lot faster today. A few more crashes today. Aidyn's crash was epic. Even got snow up his back. ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ Both Aidyn and Taleah wanted to stay longer but it was time to go. โ˜นโ˜นโ˜น

Location

Yarrangobilly Caves Visitor Centre, Yarrangobilly Caves Entry Road, Yarrangobilly NSW 2720, Australia

Info

A narrow winding single lane track into the mountain bush and down the side of a mountain to near the bottom to the visitors centre. Three caves here to choose from, but only one tour left for the day. So travel another kilometer or so along an even more narrow windy road and here we are at Jillabenan Cave. It is only 73 metres long but rates with us as the best cave we have seen to date. ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š The guide was amazing and kept the kids engaged throughout the entire tour. Hope the photos do it justice.

A Swim In The Snowy Mountains.

Thu, 20. Sep. 2018
17:03

Location

Yarrangobilly Thermal Pool, Thermal Pool Walk, Yarrangobilly NSW 2720, Australia

Info

Woohoo a swimming pool in the Snowy Mountains. Constructed in 1969 but had been used since 1896 as a swimming spot. After a cold day at the snow what better way to finish with a refreshing dip in a fresh water swimming spot. The air temp was a brisk 6ยฐc still but the water was a reasonable 26ยฐc due to a warm thermal spring. The visitors info says 27ยฐc and most people said it was 28ยฐc but does not feel like it. I reckon that is because it is 26ยฐc. ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™„ While group of 8+ kangaroo fed on the grasses around the pool area we hopped in for a dip. What a great was to finish the day. The down side was the walk back to the car. Some 700 metres up in about 800 metres distance along a very narrow service road.

Location

Yea Riverside Caravan Park, 1 Court St, Yea VIC 3717, Australia

Info

Nice caravan park along side the Yea River. Lots of bird life here including Bell Birds. Listening a constant bell sound from multiple Bell Birds. A rather amazing sound when they keep calling each other. Yea has wetlands walk from the visitors centre. We saw more birds than we though we would. Also heard several calls of different frog types, but did not see them. โ˜นโ˜นโ˜น Saw a splash around some logs and then the tell tail tiny bubbles coming from under water and then they move from spot to spot. Our feeling was that it was a platypus. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜ A warmer night than Tumut and we woke to a misty morning. By the time we got up the mist had thinned out a little and the Bell Birds had started again.
